WT Assignments

Page history last edited by DrJ 1 yr ago

Monday, February 25 - I am sorry that I wasn't able to teach on Friday and am away again today.  I was in the hospital over the weekend.  I should be back on campus on Tuesday.  In the meantime . . .

You need to thoroughly read all of Chapter 9.  It may confuse you.  You might have to read it more than once.  You might want to take notes!  Complete assignment 9.2 for Wednesday.  Also, try to compose a soprano line (only) for assignment 9.5 also due Wednesday.  Consider what made a good melody for species counterpoint and apply that to this exercise.  Figured bass is discussed on pages 70, 73-74, and 136 according to the textbook's index.  The other assignments for the chapter will be made in class on Wednesday.

I apologize that you still haven't seen your exams from several weeks ago.  I planned to hand them back on Friday.  I will get them to you Wednesday and post scores on Blackboard as soon as possible.

By Monday, November 12 everyone should do the following:

  1. Pick a resource from the Resources page - claim it!
  2. Write your name in red (like I have) next to the resource
  3. Creat a new page and name it something like JamesReview
  4. Write a critique of the resource you chose as it applies to Written Theory.  Questions you may wish to consider include:
    1. Is it worthy of being on our resources page?  ;)
    2. What aspect of this resource is most/least beneficial?
    3. Would/will you return to this resource in the future?
    4. How is this resource organized?  Is it easy to use/read?
    5. Why and why not for the above
    6. Etc.
  5. Double dip possibility - if this is a resource that is helpful for improving aural theory skills, then you could rewrite it and use it as a journal entry for AP!

By Monday, October 1 (revised date) - everyone must add something (meaningful, helpful) to the Resources page.  Be thoughtful and critical when determining what resources are reliable (especially if they are internet resources).  I've pushed back the date so that you will have heard our Fine Arts Librarian, Tammy, give her presentation to the class before this assignment is due.  The resource could be specific to WT or AP or apply to both areas.  Please add your name so we all know who added what when.

Here's an example:

Under articles, I might add something like:

Daniel G Barolsky, "The Performer as Analyst", Music Theory Online, Volume 13, Number 1, March 2007. (Dr. James)

Keep in mind that the written theory wiki assignments are here, but that I post information specific to class assignments and stuff at http://msomustheory.wordpress.com. Sorry if there's confusion!
